Child Obesity And Diet

Posted in Health & Fitness on 12.01.10

This article is looking at child obesity as the result of poor diet. Medical conditions resulting in child obesity, or the physical appearance of obesity, are issues to be discussed with your physician and beyond the scope of this article.

If you are concerned about your child possibly being overweight then you need to decide whether the excess weight is part of a growth pattern, that may change over time, or whether there is a weight problem. Your doctor will advise you on this. Child obesity can result in an increase in health problems. Don’t be embarrassed about seeking help, your doctor would rather treat child obesity or teen obesity now, than diabetes or heart disease later.

Statistics show that the level of child obesity in America is amongst the highest in the world, and a major cause is a diet of fast food, or food that is high in fat or sugar. Most children, with a change in diet and an increase in exercise, should see an improvement.

Look at the diet of your child. Is it mainly takeaways and processed food? These often contain high levels of fat, sugar and salt and should be cut back. Snacking is a bad habit, think of the calories in a candy bar! Fizzy drinks can also pile on the weight, when pure water is what the body really needs.

Every parent should try to implement the 5 A Day program. At first it may seem difficult to serve five portions of fruit and vegetables, never mind persuading your child to eat them, but if you study a list of suitable foods it is surprising how varied a diet you can provide. A glass of orange juice at breakfast, a banana mid- morning, beans or salad for lunch, fresh or frozen vegetables with dinner, dried fruit as a snack, the list is endless once you start looking. Having found the right food, the next problem is persuading your child to eat it . Try making small changes gradually altering the eating habits of the whole family. Unless a child is very overweight, maintaining the present weight without increasing it and letting the child grow to absorb the excess fat, is better than dramatic dieting. Ask your doctor about this as he can make a decision based on your child’s age and weight.

One idea worth considering is to appeal to your child’s consideration for others. Nowadays there is a lot of publicity given to world poverty and children are generally responsive to the needs of others. Get your child to add up how many dollars you spend monthly on expensive fast food, snacks and fizzy drinks, then consider spending that money on sponsoring a child. If your child feels he is helping to feed or educate another, it may well be the incentive needed. If you feel you cannot make such a commitment, why not just have a poverty jar, every time your child eats a piece of fruit instead of a candy bar, put a few cents into the jar and then let him/her chose which charity to give it to. But don’t make him feel guilty about others, anorexia isn’t healthy either!

The next thing to consider is increasing the amount of exercise your child takes and cutting the number of hours that television is watched. Overweight children find exercise difficult so start by increasing it slowly. Just walking a few hundred yards daily is a start. Your child may try to avoid exercise, but remember he may have been teased at school about being fat and failing to be athletic. As weight is lost, exercise will become easier and confidence increase, then he will become more willing to try new sports.

Finally remember that children need the support of the whole family if they is going to lose weight. If everyone follows a sensible diet your child is much more likely to succeed.

Advice on health matters should always be confirmed by a doctor and no liability is accepted for action taken.

This Fall, Author Monica Jackson Offers up Both Tricks and Treats For Readers

Posted in Arts & Entertainment on 11.01.10

Author: Anonymous
Source: free-articles

Topeka, KS September 13, 2004 — Good Riddance Buffy and you skinny Charmed witches of the WB. There’s a new slayer in town.

Her name is Angelica (Jelly), she’s African American, weighs over 200 pounds and she’s featured in plus-sized author, Monica Jackson’s newest short story, The Ultimate Diet, which is included in the much-anticipated paranormal anthology, Dark Thirst, (Pocket Books, October 2004). Dark Thirst offers up six tales of the undead by some of today’s most popular and up-and-coming African-American authors, including best-selling novelists, Jackson, Donna Hill and Omar Tyree.

In The Ultimate Diet, Jackson’s offbeat story and the anthology’s inaugural tale, best friends, Keeshia and Jelly are eventually forced to face off, when the main character, Keeshia decides the only way she can lose weight and stay slim is to become a vampire; the undead โ€” not knowing that in her spare time, her best friend, Jelly has become a vampire slayer.

โ€œI’m not interested in writing perfect characters. My heroines are a hair on the left side of different โ€” if you know what I mean. I will always write about real and confident heroines who are overweight and struggling with acne, stretch marks, a smart mouth . . . and/or some other perceived flaw. And I think being undead is about as big a flaw as one can have,โ€ Jackson says with a laugh.

With this story under her belt, as well as her newest full-length novel and first paranormal romance, In My Dreams, which also features a full-figured African-American demon slayer, Jackson hopes to put hefty African-American female fictional characters in the forefront of pop culture. Jackson is unique in that she’s one of only a few black women writing in the paranormal genre and she’s the only one writing paranormal novels featuring positive overweight heroines.

โ€œWe women need to learn to embrace who we are, where we are, no matter our size, and I’m committed to telling tales that send a strong and positive message about weight and self-acceptance. I like writing stories about large women that are comfortable in their skin. Because the truth is, the impact of America’s plus-sized population is undeniable. Sixty-two percent of American women wear size twelve or larger. Big is definitely beautiful, but unfortunately in fiction, you don’t see life-affirming stories about full-figured women. It’s as if we’re not capable of love, workplace success or being happy. I want to write stories for large women โ€” that celebrate our various facets of fabulousness!โ€ says Jackson.

Jackson’s novel In My Dreams, (Kensington Dafina, October 2004), is a refreshing tale that focuses on a sensitive and sexy romance between a unique heroine and a to-die-for (literally) hero. In the novel, dark-skinned Bless Sanderson’s โ€œgiftโ€ of second sight leads her to Atlanta, where she finds her sexy sister, Ginger pregnant and under threat from unknown forces. While in Atlanta, Bless meets Rick, for whom she falls hard. But her sight warns her that Rick is tied to Ginger and the increasing paranormal phenomenon surrounding her and her baby.

When Bless learns that her feelings for Rick are reciprocated, she’s torn, and forced to question whether the possibility of a dream-come-true love is worth sacrificing what’s most important to her. Suddenly imbued with a demon-slaying power beyond her comprehension, it’s up to Bless to save her sister’s unborn child โ€” even as she prays that the love in her heart for Rick will be strong enough to withstand the evil that seeks to destroy them all.

With the novel, In My Dreams, Jackson not only creates a collage of vivid characters, but she also writes a story that is a moving tribute to the full-figured woman. She’s truly created an imaginative story that challenges the notion that only a svelte heroine can slay vampires, have steamy romantic romps and find everlasting love. It’s a perfect read for paranormal booklovers of all ages, races and sizes.

In addition to her newest novels featuring plus-sized heroines, Jackson also wrote 1999’s The Look of Love, which featured a hefty main character. To date, that book is one of Jackson’s most popular novels, garnering her numerous awards and her largest reader response thus far. Up next for Jackson is the January 2005 release of the anthology Big Girls Don’t Cry (NAL/Signet), an upbeat collection of stories about plus-sized women dealing with plus-sized romantic issues.

AUTHOR BIO

Monica Jackson has published eight novels and more than 8 novellas/short stories during the span of seven years. Heralded as a โ€œgifted writerโ€ by Rendezvous Magazine, her debut novel, Midnight Blue was developed into a television movie of the week by Black Entertainment Television in the year 2000. Why Aren’t You Using an Effective Clear Skin Treatment?

Posted in Health & Fitness on 11.01.10

Author: Laurel Levine
Source: ezinearticles.com

Are you frustrated with looking for an effective clear skin treatment? There are many different things that contribute to blemishes and acne. There are many natural solutions that can heal blemishes and help prevent new ones from forming. Let’s start with Active Manuka Honey.

Honey has been used for centuries as natural medicine for a variety of different conditions. Only recently have researchers learned that some of the enzymes in honey have natural anti-bacterial activity. Scientists have shown that Manuka Honey, a mono-floral variety produced in New Zealand, has the highest anti-bacterial activity of all.

Certain types of bacteria are found in the skin’s pores and contribute to the minor infection that accompanies blemishes and acne. Many of the acne-formulated cleansers that you see on the market, including Clearasil, contain an antibacterial agent called triclosan. Researchers have shown that the acne causing bacteria are becoming resistant to triclosan. Probably because of it’s wide-scale use in shower gels and hand soap.

Manuka honey has proven effectiveness against other types of anti-biotic resistant infections. For clear skin treatment, look for cleansers that contain the honey and after you clean your face at night, try using a night-cream that also contains it. Creams containing it are effective for healing blemishes and killing the bacteria that can cause new ones to form.

Vitamin A creams are sometimes prescribed for treating acne, although their exact activity is unknown and the prescription creams often cause burning and excessive dryness. Avocado oil and Shea butter are natural sources of vitamin A. They soothe and prevent excessive dryness. In fact, Shea butter is a valued for its pharmaceutical activity in countries where the tree grows. Shea butter, avocado oil and active Manuka honey are found in some of the best night creams on the market. They work for everyone, regardless of their skin type.

In addition to a good clear skin treatment, you may also want to avoid some ingredients that are commonly found in skincare and other personal care products, because they are known to clog the pores and contribute to blemishes. There are many ingredients like that, but the most common ones are petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin wax. They are derived from petroleum; crude oil. They are not compatible with the skin’s natural oils and interfere with the natural rejuvenation processes.

If the clear skin treatment that you are looking at contains any of those ingredients, don’t buy it. It will make your problem worse, instead of better.

Bottom line, inflammation of the tiny sebaceous glands is one of the things that cause blemishes and acne. The most powerful natural anti-inflammatory that has been discovered to date is a form of keratin, a protein that makes up over 90% of the skin’s cells. It has been shown in clinical studies to reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of bio-chemicals that cause it. The biochemical is called PGE2 creams containing the special form of keratin have been shown to inhibit its production by up to 70%. So, now you know what an effective clear skin treatment should contain. All that you have to do is go shop.

Treating a Yeast Infection – Learn the Quick, Easy Way to Eliminate Them Forever

Posted in Health & Fitness on 10.01.10

Author: Brian Prinz
Source: ezinearticles.com

Countless women, in all position and location, have to deal with yeast infections. 70% of women in the world have experienced, at least one yeast infection within the span of their life. There are a number of signs that are brought about by these trying infections.

The following is a list of major indicators to be watching for:

If you suffer from redness “down there,” an burning itch that won’t end, and a feeling similar to stinging when you urinate, you may very well be experiencing a yeast infection. This itching can turn out to be so bad that you won’t even choose to go away from the house.

An additional critical sign is a secretion from the vagina. This generally shows up as a creamy white liquid, typically white, with a thickness varying from thin to insipid and a pastier feel. Plus, you could get a whiff of an scent being produced from the secretion. A noticeable scent is a frequent signal that will refer to illness.

An additional good indication of infection is pain suffered with during intercourse. Keep in mind that if you engage in sexual intercourse at the same time as experiencing a yeast infection, you put your companion at risk for acquiring it. If you happen to transmit the infection to your companion, they can infect you over again.

You could be experiencing melancholy or simply a current series of raised temper, but this is pretty standard; usually, it’s brought about by the discomfort the infection creates. A yeast infection, also called Candida, may bring about other symptoms including gaining of weight, oral thrush, a craving to consume foods high in sugar or starch, anxiety, grief, problems concentrating, problems pertaining to your skin, such as acne or eczema, weakness, and irritability.

In order to nullify your yeast infection, perform these steps:

Your first step is a very simple system. We all recognize we ought to maintain good sanitation, alas there are individuals who are lacking in this area. Your own body needs to be kept hygienic. Still, there are individuals who were brought up not to consider daily bathing as a needed undertaking. Make certain that you utilize only unscented soaps or body washes, that you bathe in warm water, and you towel your body totally.

Put on clean clothing, choose only cotton undergarments, and steer clear from jeans that are too skin-tight. How come? This is because your skin needs to be able to breathe. If you frequently wear clothes that are skin tight or created from man-made material, air cannot get through the fabric to your body. When your body is unable to breathe, you generate more perspiration, that leads to microbes growing and then, most likely, to a yeast infection.

Do not dismiss any indicators that emerge. Even a insignificant suggestion of a yeast infection should be dealt with appropriately. You may buy some natural and holistic cures that keep them from returning and helping your body in the removal of the infection. Serious medical issues can be the consequence of untreated yest infections.

Safe for use on any body part or skin type, ClearLight effectively clears a high percentage of P. acnes lesions in just four weeks.

Acne is estimated to affect more than 80% of the world’s population at some time during their life. In the U.S., more than $1.4 billion is spent on anti-acne medications and treatments. Unfortunately, many topical and oral acne treatments are known to cause side effects such as redness, irritation, peeling or increased sensitivity to the sun. ClearLight is an important new treatment for acne because it is effective, painless and most importantly, has no known side effects.

Consider the following segment idea:

ClearLight Acne Treatment Zaps San Diego: San Diego-based physician, Dr. Mitchel P. Goldman, can demonstrate how the high-intensity light is used on a local resident to treat his/her acne.
